The uniting quality of this collection is that each piece has been made to exist on their own. No attempt has been made to make these in a batch or recreate to any exacting measures. These pieces offer me up an opportunity to explore my creative practice and both develop and hone skills. They offer up a chance for me take a breath and enjoy a bit of freedom which can be hard to reach for amongst the daily practice of running a creative business.. Often I am exploring larger forms, trying to really challenge my making skills. I find that the larger pieces present an opportunity to experiment with new glaze finishes as there is less concern about their strict functionality. but also the greater surface allows greater variation in colour and texture..
Among this collection the more strictly functional will still be found in items such as teapots, serving bowls and larger jugs. Much of the work I make is quite dependant on its likeness from the last piece. Of course I will never made to factory standards of perfect likeness from piece to piece, but with these more complicated pieces I choose to remove the pressure of production making and allow each piece to sing on its own. Again giving me a little window of opportunity to allow some playfulness and creativity into my practice.
